How Long After Waxing or Laser Hair Removal Can You Get Tattooed?
Quick Summary
Fitting hair removal and a tattoo into one Bali trip? Here is the timing that works.
- After waxing: 48 hours minimum, three days is safer. Waxing leaves the follicles open, and a needle should not go in while they still are.
- After laser hair removal: 4 to 8 weeks, and only once the whole course is finished, not between sessions.
- The order is permanent: laser hair removal cannot be done over tattooed skin, so the laser comes first or it does not happen there at all.
- Waxing is usually unnecessary: your artist shaves the area anyway, so waxing buys very little and costs you two days.
Many people book a tattoo while they are in Canggu, only to realise they recently had waxing or laser hair removal. The timing matters because both treatments temporarily make the skin more sensitive, even if it looks normal on the surface. Tattooing too soon can lead to unnecessary irritation and a more uncomfortable session.
The good news is that you usually do not need to choose between smooth skin and a new tattoo. The key is allowing the skin enough time to recover after waxing or laser hair removal before it is tattooed. Here is how long to wait, what signs your skin is ready, and when it is better to reschedule your appointment.
How long after waxing can you get a tattoo?
Our artists at Canggu Ink Club recommend waiting at least 48 hours after waxing before getting tattooed, although three days is usually the safer option.
The wait is not about the ink. Waxing leaves your skin in a "just disturbed" state. Like walking across freshly raked sand instead of firm ground, the surface needs a little time to settle before it is ready for tattooing.
Freshly waxed skin can be pink, slightly raised, and dotted with small follicular bumps. Stencils transfer best onto clean, dry, calm skin, so irritated skin is less predictable to work on and harder to read during the session.
Use your skin, not the calendar. You have waited long enough when the area looks and feels completely normal again, with no redness, bumps, or tenderness.
Why does waxing matter before a tattoo if the ink goes deeper than the wax?

Because the two are not competing for the same space. They are competing for the same few days of healing.
Tattoo ink is deposited into the dermis, well below anything wax reaches. That is why waxing a healed tattoo does not pull ink out. It is also why the "wax only touches the surface" argument gets misapplied here. Nobody is worried the wax will disturb ink that is not there yet.
The concern is the tissue the needle travels through. A tattoo needle passes through the epidermis thousands of times to reach the dermis, and it relies on that outer layer being intact, because the epidermis is what closes over the top afterwards and seals the ink in.
For a day or two after a wax, that layer is closer to a colander than a seal.
Three things follow from it:
- Open follicles. Every hair removed leaves a shaft that is briefly open, and waxed skin has thousands of them. Waxing has been linked to the spread of skin infections such as molluscum contagiosum, partly because it creates tiny breaks in the skin and temporarily disrupts the skin barrier.
- Perifollicular swelling. The tissue around each follicle inflames and swells slightly. Tattooing into swollen tissue means the skin is a different shape on the day than it will be a week later.
- Raised sensitivity. Stripped skin has fewer layers between the needle and the nerve endings. The session hurts more and you bleed more, and more bleeding means more ink pushed back out during healing.
Give it 72 hours and none of the three applies.
How long after laser hair removal can you get a tattoo?
Wait 4 to 8 weeks after your final laser hair removal session before getting tattooed.Laser hair removal uses heat to damage the hair follicle, so the treated area often behaves like mild sunburn afterwards.
Redness, swelling around the follicles, and occasional crusting are normal, while treated hairs continue shedding over the next week or two. The skin also becomes more sensitive to sunlight during this time, which is worth remembering if you are holidaying in Bali.
The key word is final. Laser hair removal is completed over a series of treatments, typically six to eight sessions, because each session only targets hairs that are actively growing. The waiting period starts after your last appointment, when the skin has finished recovering.
This is different from laser tattoo removal, which uses different wavelengths and targets tattoo pigment rather than hair. If you are fading an old tattoo before a cover-up, that follows a separate timeline.
What if your laser course is only half finished?
Then you are choosing between two outcomes, not arranging two appointments.
Getting the tattoo now closes that patch of skin to laser hair removal permanently. Four sessions in, six sessions in, it makes no difference. The moment there is ink in that area, the clinic will shield it and work around it for the rest of your life.
Three ways forward, and they are genuinely different:
- Finish the course first. Complete the remaining sessions, then book the tattoo 2 to 4 weeks after the final one. Slowest route, and the only one that gets you both things in the same spot.
- Tattoo now and stop the laser there. Accept that shaving and electrolysis are your options for that area from then on. Reasonable if the hair is light or the placement is one you rarely think about.
- Move the placement. Put the design on skin you are not treating. The easiest fix and the one people consider last.
One workaround does not work. Waxing the area before the tattoo instead of finishing the laser breaks the course anyway, because clinics ask you not to wax, tweeze, or epilate between laser sessions. The laser needs the follicle intact to work. Waxing removes exactly what it is aiming at.
Can you get laser hair removal over a tattoo?

No. Once the tattoo is there, laser hair removal is no longer an option for that area.
A hair removal laser targets pigment and cannot tell the difference between the melanin in a hair follicle and the pigment in tattoo ink. Instead of delivering a small amount of heat into one follicle, it delivers heat across the entire tattoo, because the whole design reads as a target.
The result can be burns, blistering, scarring, distorted linework, or patchy fading. Dark ink absorbs the most energy and is therefore at the highest risk.
Better technology has not changed this. Modern hair removal lasers safely treat a much wider range of skin tones than they once did, but tattooed skin remains off-limits.
That does not mean your hair removal options disappear entirely. Laser can still treat the skin around a tattoo when the ink is carefully covered with a protective shield, which is standard practice at reputable clinics.
If hair grows directly through the tattoo itself, electrolysis is the only permanent option because it destroys each follicle with a tiny electric current rather than light.
The practical rule is simple. If you plan to remove hair permanently, do it before getting tattooed.
Why do you wait days after waxing but weeks after laser before a tattoo?
You wait days after waxing but weeks after laser because the two treatments affect the skin in completely different ways. Waxing briefly irritates the skin, while laser hair removal creates a deeper thermal injury that takes much longer to heal.
Side by side, the difference stops looking arbitrary:
Factor | Waxing | Laser hair removal |
Main target | Hair removed from the follicle | Hair follicle destroyed with heat |
Skin injury | Superficial mechanical irritation | Deeper thermal injury |
Typical recovery | 2 to 3 days | 4 to 8 weeks |
Common after-effects | Redness, tenderness, follicular bumps | Redness, swelling, shedding hairs, sun sensitivity |
Wait before tattooing | 2 to 3 days | 4 to 8 weeks |
The practical takeaway is simple. Waxing is a scheduling detail. Laser hair removal is a longer-term project. You can wax on Monday and be tattooed later that week. You cannot realistically fit laser hair removal into the same tattoo trip.
This also explains a mistake we see regularly. People book both treatments in the same week because the appointments seem equally routine. They may each take about an hour, but what happens under the skin is completely different.
Can you get a tattoo after a Brazilian wax?
Yes. The same waiting rule applies: wait at least two days after a Brazilian wax before getting tattooed, although three days is usually the safer option.
Bikini line, hip, and upper thigh tattoos need one extra consideration, and it has nothing to do with getting the tattoo. It is what happens afterwards.
Waxed hair usually starts growing back within three to four weeks. A fresh tattoo should not be waxed again for at least four to six weeks. Those timelines do not quite match, so regrowth can arrive while the tattoo is still healing.
In Bali, that can be especially uncomfortable. Regrowth in a high-friction area, under swimwear or board shorts, on scooter seats, and in humid weather creates a higher chance of irritation and ingrown hairs at a time when the skin still needs gentle treatment.
The easiest solution is to time your wax so regrowth begins after the tattoo has settled, or plan on carefully trimming the area until waxing is safe again. Your artist can help you decide which approach makes the most sense for your tattoo placement.
Hair removal methods compared
Method | Wait before tattooing | Usable on tattooed skin afterwards |
Shaving | None. Your artist does it as part of prep | Yes, once the tattoo is fully healed |
Waxing | 48 hours minimum, three days better | Yes, but not until roughly 4 to 6 weeks after tattooing |
Depilatory cream | 48 hours, and patch test first if it is new to you | Yes, on fully healed skin |
Laser hair removal | 2 to 4 weeks after the final session of the course | No. Around the tattoo with shielding only, never over it |
IPL | Treat it with the same caution as laser hair removal. | No. Same pigment problem |
Electrolysis | Usually a few days, once any redness has settled. | Yes. The only permanent option for hair on the design itself |
Conclusion
Waxing needs two to three days, and three is better than two. Laser hair removal needs four to eight weeks, and needs finishing entirely before you go anywhere near a tattoo, because it cannot be done on inked skin afterwards. In Bali, wax whenever suits you, keep it out of villa pools and hot springs for those few days, and book the tattoo for the back half of the trip so you can swim first.

FAQ
The hair removal questions we get asked most often
No. Ink sits in the dermis and wax only affects the surface layers. Wait 4 to 6 weeks after being tattooed, then treat the area like any other skin.
Avoid it before a tattoo. Depilatory creams dissolve hair chemically and commonly cause contact irritation, and a reaction may not appear for a day or two. Waxing gives you a more predictable timeline.
Yes. Hair removal lasers target pigment, so they can overheat tattoo ink instead of just the hair follicle. The result can be burns, blistering, patchy fading, or distorted linework. Once an area is tattooed, laser hair removal is no longer a safe option there.
Keep the laser off the tattoo. A reputable clinic will cover the tattoo with a protective shield and only treat the surrounding skin. If hair grows directly through the tattoo, electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal option.
